Sheriff Leads Team To A Grade Victory

It was do or die for the Bendigo East seniors on Sunday, like the rest of our teams, a win was vital in maintaining our hope for a division premiership.

Strath Dodgers hosted Bendigo East on Sunday Afternoon to be what was the game of the season. Both teams started off slowly, however Bendigo East had a clear advantage, managing to get runners on from save hits, unlike Dodgers, who had to face the in form Aaron Sheriff on the mound for East, who knocked down Dodgers first seven batters, having a perfect first two innings. By this time, East sprung the lead. A stolen home base from Brendan Aikman took the score to 1-0 going into the third. Fantastic pitching from Sheriff didn't allow any runs to score while Bendigo East strenthened their lead over the next few innings. Good batting from Damian Tresize, Anthony Sheriff, Brendan Aikman and Aaron Sheriff put Bendigo East into a 7-0 lead going into the fifth inning.

However, the game was still young and a pitching change from Geoff Holland to Nick Whatley seemed to basically halt East's run rate, they only managed to score one more run by the end of the game. By this time, Dodgers had nearly made the 8 run comeback. Aaron Sheriff continued to pitch well, but Dodgers batters were catching up and Sheriff did start to get tired. In the last inning, Dodgers were down 8-4 before Nick Whatley approached the plate with loaded bases. With two out, a home run would've let the game continue, but Whatley hit a two RBI double, still giving Dodgers hope of winning, or at least drawing. The two equalising runs were both in scoring position, but Sheriff struck out the next batter to clench Bendigo East's victory.

Final Score: Strath Dodgers 6 lost to Bendigo East 8. Win: A Sheriff. Lose: G Holland. Save: -. Player of the Match: Aaron Sheriff.

Bendigo East will now play Falcons in a best of three Grand Final series taking place at Quarry Hill, starting this Sunday at 2.30pm.

June-August Update

A brief update of the past few months at Bendigo East:

The club as a whole is still progressing and is still trying to fill in teams to keep our city's junior programs in tact.

The past few very wet monhs have made it extremely hard for our teams to practice, especially our juniors who seem to be the most unlucky with the Tuesday night weather. Despite this, both our U12 and U14 teams showed great improvement on the field. The U12s, a team fielded mostly with first timers had a fun year with their coach Dave Simpson and learnt some very valuable baseball skills that they can now use in years to come.

Our U14s came from behind in the competition, getting thrashed every week, to eventually beating the top sides like Falcons and Scots. The team was led by James O'Keefe who has recently started training with the seniors, and will be a very valuable senior player in a few years time. Like the U12s, the majority of the team were first timers and their improvement throughout the season was remarkable. To put up a fight against the extremely experienced Falcons in the Semi Final made the club proud of this team.

The Bendigo East U16 team had a very off and on season. Not only did the bye every 3 weeks affect their season, but the wet weather caused several wash-outs and made it hard for the team to keep it's consistancy. Unlike their competition rivals, U16 baseball was the only option for most of these players. However, from this team, 2 players have started playing senior baseball with the club this year: Brad Huggard and Wes Hopcott. 3 Players have been filling in positions in the U18 team, Nick Wingrave along with Hopcott and Huggard as well, and 5 players represented the Association in Geelong; Hopcott, Wingrave, Jayden Judd, Kane Tieman and Tom Williamson. Despite their season's troubles, Bendigo East should still put up a decent fight against Dodgers in the final, already beating the team throughout the season.

Our U18s, playing Falcons every week have had a tough task playing a team with players such as Darryl Muns, Nathan Larson and Jake Connaughton, but the team stepped up and beat them on several accounts. However, the Bendigo East team did hold some very good players. Luke Smart, who is now playing A Grade baseball weekly, and Jye Floyd, who is an up and coming quality catcher who was given the opportunity to catch in the A Grade game against Scots. Like the U16s, Bendigo East should put up a decent fight against Falcons in the closing weeks of the 2010 season.

For our Seniors, Thursday night training has improved from the days since 2007-08. Both divisions have trainined all year, along with the U18s. Since June, our pitching machine has been fixed, new bats have been purchased for the club and team morale has been rising. Although our senior sides have been undermanned, our numbers will improve in years to come. The majority of our B Grade team this year has been juniors and first year seniors, and the state of our U16 and U18 teams should gradually feed our senior teams over the next few years.

Not only this, but our arrival into the A Grade competition since 2008 has been successful, we have managed to beat every team in the division, which proves that our club is a worthy contendor for this years BBA Premiership. Furthermore, our representation at the Senior Carnival in Mildura was excellent. 5 players, Aaron Sheriff, AJ Sheriff, Damian Tresize, James Clow and Matt Gould all featured in Bendigo uniforms.

For our two senior teams, it has been an enjoyable past few months, although our B Grade (or C Grade) season has come to an end, we look forward to dominating the C Grade section at the BBA presentation night and give the best of luck to our A Grade team over the next few weeks.

As for our administration, the people keeping our club alive (excpet for me, sorry about the website again), we have stepped up dramatically in the past few years and continue to improve. Representation at BBA meetings has been excellent. Gay Huggard, Helen Aikman and Don Mitchell have put in countless hours for the club, running fundraisers, keeping an eye on our registration (making sure that players are eligable for finals), organinsing events, securing sponsors and releasing newsletters. Please make sure that you thank them when you see them next!

Hope to see you all at Quarry Hill on Sunday, or at Presentation Night.

Bendigo Seniors Step Up In Mildura

The 2010 Bendigo Baseball Association Senior Team travelled to Mildura this weekend for the Baseball Victoria Championships. The 2010 team looked very different than last years. 2 In A Row: East Defeat Scots

After Bendigo East's fantastic win last week against Falcons, this weeks game with Scots at Quarry Hill looked to be an easy win for the in form A Grade team.

However, with John Taylor looking to be in fine form on the mound for Scots and East's starting pitcher, Damien Tresize still sore, it was anyone's game. The game started very evenly, both teams scored two in the first innings, Julian Oxlade getting the home team of to a great start, hitting safely and scoring along with Aaron Sheriff.

After the shaky start, Aaron Sheriff, who was starting the pitching for East, stood up to the pressure and pitched well, only letting two runs score in the next five innings.

Bendigo East, on the other hand, maintained their run rate all throughout the game. Matt Gould, Damien Tresize, Julian Oxlade and Aaron Sheriff all batted well, all adjusting to the extreme past changes going from John Taylor, slowing down to Dean Toy, then facing Aaron Petri's pace. Although Bendigo East's batting was very good, Scots fielding was not at it's strongest, which gave East the advantage

Bendigo East's fielding was excellent, only few errors were recorded. Aaron Sheriff pitched the whole game, striking out 8 batters and Matt Gould's performance at first base was outstanding.

This leaves Bendigo East at 4 wins, 4 losses going in to play Dodgers in 2 weeks time at Quarry Hill. If Bendigo East can bat as well as they have in the last two weeks, it will be a very close game between the 2nd and 3rd placed teams.

Final Score:

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Final
Bendigo East 2 4 2 2 2 1 1 14
Scots 2 0 1 0 0 1 3 7

Player of the match: Matt Gould (Batted 4 from 4, Fielded no errors, 1 catch, 1 foul fly) Win: Sheriff. Loss: Taylor. Save: -

The Bendigo East B Grade team were given the tough task of meeting with Scots B Grade on Sunday Morning. Scots have gone through the season undefeated, except for last week's forfeit.

Considering Scots fantastic record, Bendigo East started off very well, getting on top of Scots starter Glenn Davies, basically matching Scots score after three innings, thanks to good batting from Luke Smart, Chris Tieman, Don Mitchell and Dave Simpson.

Despite Bendigo East's good offence, Scots very experienced batting line-up was too overwhelming for the East fielding. Batting from Darren Taylor, Glenn Davies, Wayne Petri, Des Henderson, Kenan Jack, Richard Smart and Lewis Pennhall was outstanding.

Bendigo East went on to let several runs through, both because of poor fielding and excellent Scots batting.

Final Score:

  1 2 3 4 5 6 Final
Scots 3 2 5 4 7 0 21
Bendigo East 2 0 4 0 0 X 6

U14s Win First

Scots U14s met with Bendigo East at Maiden Gully on Saturaday afternoon.

After going through the season winless, Bendigo East, with new players Edmund and Jakub Koska and an in form James O'Keefe pitching, the team was due for a good win.

The team started well, James O'Keefe hitting a double and Kyle Judd, Froilan Aquino and Isaac Thomas all scoring in the first innings.

James O'Keefe, fresh out of the U14 weekend in Ballarat made easy work of the Scots line-up, with the exception of Jack Warner. Every single put-out was a James O'Keefe strike-out. Bendigo East's batting got even better after that. New player, Edmund Koska, hit a massive double through the cones and both Kyle Judd and Froilan Aquino both got safe hits again. Furthermore, new players Tilly and Marla Rajics used good team batting to score runs for the team.

O'Keefe continued to pitch well, and although every out was a strike out, there was some excellent fielding by Edmund Koska, Isaac Thomas and Froilan Aquino, not to mention the hard task of catching James, shared by Kyle Judd and Kaitlen Beer, who caught very well, holding many fast ball strike-outs cleanly.

East Defeat Falcons - 1st Time Since '07

Sunday afternoon's game in the Bendigo Baseball Association A Grade competition had Bendigo East meet with Falcons at Eaglehawk.

Bendigo East coming out of a defeat from bottom of the ladder Strath Dodgers gave championship favourites, Falcons, the biggest odds in winning. However, from the start of the game Bendigo East gained a 3-0 lead after three innings of Falcons, Troy Waterman pitching. Bendigo East pitcher, Damien Tresize, made easy work of the Falcons batting line-up, with the exception of Mick Peters, who has batted sensationally this season.

It wasn't until late in the third innings when Falcons scored two of a shallow outfield punch. With this innings came a nasty blow to the head for Bendigo East shortstop, Julian Oxlade. Despite the pain he continued to play on and even hit a solo in park homerun of an outfield error in the very next inning. Both teams continued to play well and the run rate of both teams were almost identical. Bendigo East maintained the lead because of outstanding outfield work between Brendan Aikman and Luke Smart, quality infield work, excellent batting, especially from Aaron Sheriff and Matt Gould and the starting pitcher, Tresize, who went on to throw the entire game.

A pitching change midway through the game gave Falcons infielder Mick Peters the ball. This only softened Bendigo East's run rate, but eventually stopped runs entirely in the last two innings. This change could have won the game for Falcons, giving that their batting towards the end of the game was exceptional, especially Paul Bingham.

A thrilling recovery from Anthony Sheriff at third base gave Bendigo East an entertaining one run victory. Final score: Falcons: 5 lost to Bendigo East: 6. Player of the Match: Aaron Sheriff (batted 3 from 4). Win: Tresize. Loss: Waterman. Save: -

Bingo Tickets Finally Pay Off

The Thursday night after training pub session had James Clow, Damien Tresize, Aaron Sheriff and Brendan Aikman (all in correct Bingo order) all try their luck on the Bingo Tickets.

They had been working on winning the big $100 prize for many weeks and had only recieved occasional $1 prizes from the fierce goddess of Bingo. However, their luck changed when they agreed to split any big winnings and savour the fun, only opening one at a time. The results were almost instant, three $1 prizes in a row from Tresize was an extremely positive sign for the group. All of a sudden Clow flips an instant $100 ticket. The bar erupted with a roar and the jealousy from other bar flies was a sight to behold.

Only moments later, rookie Bingo participant, Brendan Aikman, also succeeds in the winnings. Another $100 ticket was revealed. This comes only weeks after the same group beat the Barry Trivia Machine at Cluedo, winning the big $100 prize.

In other non playing related news, Bendigo East Baseball Club, in conjunction with Strathfieldsaye Dodgers Baseball Club and West Bendigo Cricket Club have secured a split $5000.00 grant to be used for training purposes. Umpiring, Coaching, Responsible Serving of Alcohol, First Aid, IT and scoring courses will now be covered by the club for any member or any close relatives of finalcial members. If you have any ideas on how our club could use this grant, please contact Helen on 0419510712.

Dodgers Dominate Round 6

Sunday Afternoon's game between Strath Dodgers and Bendigo East at Strathfieldsaye was the game of the round, Bendigo East needed to get even with Dodgers after round 3's humiliating defeat at Quarry Hill and to stay second on the ladder.

Dodgers pitcher Casey Woodward opened the pitching to Bendigo East. It was a quick innings except of Brendan Aikman's triple that basically led to a solo home run from an error in the outfield. Aaron Sheriff started on the mound for Bendigo East, he started well, striking out the first two batsmen, however Dodgers rallied and scored 2 from 2 outs. Bendigo East came back thanks to excellent bass-running from Don Mitchell who sacrificed his own safety for the team. He inevitably scored a run, plus Aikman capitalising on a walk that led to another run. For the next four innings the scores were practically level, Dodgers lead 4-3 going into fifth. A pitching change from both teams changed the game dramatically. Damien Tresize took over for Sheriff, however Dodgers who seemed to be in the mood for a fast pitcher were hitting safe-hits everywhere. 4 runs were taken in one innings, 3 of those coming from a bases loaded triple from Nick Whatley.

Coming from this, Dodgers needed to seal the win. Nick Whatley was put in to pitch to save the game, Bendigo East could not score whilst he was pitching. Bendigo East coach, James Clow put himself on to pitch and threw very unpredictably to keep Dodgers at 8, but the last innings saw no runs for Bendigo East.

Despite the large 5 run margain both teams played well, no errors were made from Bendigo East and the only set-back was Dodgers aggressive batting. Final Score: Strathfieldsaye Dodgers: 8 defeated Bendigo East: 3.

In the B Grade clash, highly fancied Strath Dodgers B1 met up with Bendigo East at Quarry Hill.

Despite the odds, David Simpson started the game with a quick 1-2-3 innings, putting Dodgers in danger. Getting the early lead, Bendigo scored twice from quality hitting. However, excellent batting from Dodgers best B Graders, Col Pithie, Gordon Youl and Cameron Bell kept Dodgers at Bendigo East's pace all throughout the game. A pitching change giving Luke Smart the mound seemed to not halt the pace, going into each teams last innings, Dodgers were up by a run.

Luke Smart, however, lost form, walking several batters, but also being hit for many safe-hits, which was uncontrollable due to the Dodgers aggressive batting line-up. Sam Wilson was brought in to pitch and closed out the innings despite also giving away several walks. The next innings, Bendigo East needed a massive 9 runs to win. Quality infield work by club coach, Col Pitchie, kept Bendigo East dangerman, Brendan Aikman off base. However, Bendigo East managed to score 3 runs in the last innings, Matt Gould and Wes Hopcott batting to their best ability on the day.

Final Score: Bendigo East: 11 lost to Strathfieldsaye Dodgers B1: 16.

Attard Leads Falcons To Big Victory - Bendigo Advertiser, 27th May, 2010.

In the other game of the day FALCONS overcame a shaky start to defeat Scots 15-7 in their Bendigo Baseball Association A grade clash. The championship favourites uncharacteristically trailed 5-4 after the first innings. Stung into action, Falcons’ offence replied with three runs in the second innings. From this point, Falcons began to assert its dominance. Pitcher Warren Attard again proved that you don’t have to overpower teams to be successful, striking out six batsmen and only walking two in six innings. In contrast, Scots pitchers Johnathon Taylor and Aaron Petri walked nine between them. Falcons scored eight runs in the fourth innings to put the game beyond Scots’ reach. For Scots. Ben Jacobs, Johnathon Taylor and Aaron Petri showed that they have developed into good A grade players. Falcons continue to provide the benchmark for the competition with outstanding defence and hitting as well as steady pitching. Finals Score: Falcons: 15 defeated Scots 7.

The early Under 16s game saw Bendigo East host Strath Dodgers Women at Quarry Hill.

Tom Williamson started Bendigo East's pitching, Dodgers proved their batting talent by scoring several runs in the first, proving an actuall threat to the young Bendigo East team. However, Bendigo East struck back after this and scored 8 in their first innings. Both team's fielding improved dramatically after this. Good outfielding by young Dodgers girl Maggie Pithie and good infielding kept Bendigo East's score relatively close.

But towards the end of the game, East showed off their batting power, biggest hits coming from captain Kane Tieman and Tom Williamson.

Final Score: Bendigo East: 18 defeated Strathfieldsaye Dodgers Women: 6.

BEBC Celebrate 1st Win On Home Ground Since 07

Sunday afternoon's game between Bendigo East and Scots was a tight battle, mainly dominated by two men, the pitchers of both teams Aaron Petri and Damien Tresize who won the battle with a little help coming from his lucky split pants.

The majority of the day's action fell within the first three innings. Damien Tresize was in very fine form and pitched throughout the whole game, and until the last innings threw a no-hitter. The first innings was an easy 1-2-3 for Bendigo East, which gave them the good start that they needed. Bendigo East capitalised on Scots errors and took two runs in the first. Scots second innings saw some of the best fielding Bendigo East has ever seen. Quick plays, tight pitching and an amazing diving catch by short stop, Julian Oxlade, which gave East another 1-2-3 innings. Walks and poor fielding from Scots lead to Bendigo East's bases being loaded in the second. Damien Tresize then blasted one into the right-field corner hitting three RBIs and giving himself a triple.

By the start of the third innings Bendigo East were in a 5-0 lead and continued to shut-out Scots. Yet, another 1-2-3 innings from Tresize gave Scots supporters a bleak outlook. However, after this innings, Bendigo East lacked motivation, letting occasional runs pass through and not scoring runs frequently enough. Scots fielding and pitching remained aggressive and by the time the last innings fell Scots had gained a run back making the score 5-1. A two out rally saw one more run from Scots go through and two on base, but it was the excellent pitching by Tresize and his handy slacks that won the game for Bendigo East.

Final score: Bendigo East: 5 defeated Scots: 2. Player of the match: Julian Oxlade. Win: Tresize. Lose: Petri. Save: -

Sunday's early game had Falcons B2 meet with Bendigo East at Quarry Hill in the B Grade competition. After Bendigo East's close loss to Falcons B1 and Falcons A in the last two weeks, East needed revenge on their cross-town rivals.

Terry Smith, who was playing game number 501 started the game for Falcons. His experience clearly payed off, as he shut out East in the first innings. Trent Jackson and Terry Smith lead off Falcons first innings well, both scoring runs, giving Falcons the 2-0 lead going into the second. However, this game was a case of whatever Falcons can do Bendigo East can do better. By the end of the third innings Bendigo East had a 3-2 lead. Falcons then took one back leveling up the game making it 3 each.

East's fifth innings earnt them seven runs, thanks to brilliant hitting by debut player Brad Huggard, Wes Hopcott and Brendan Aikman. The game looked over when Falcons went into the last innings down 10-3, but Falcons came into the situation aggressively. They had scored four runs without a single out. An infield catch by East's pitcher Chris Tieman gave the home team some hope Falcons had nearly completed the come back with only one out. With runners in scoring positions, Falcons had only one out, and were only one run down. A misscalled strikeout gave East the second out, which eventually led to a protest from Falcons. However Bendigo East finished off the innings just in time to achieve the win.

Final score: Falcons B2: 8 lost to Bendigo East: 9. Player of the match: Geoff Clow. Win: Smart (East) Lose: Smith (Falcons) Save: -

A's Go Down - B's Win First on Mother's Day

Mother's Day Baseball at Quarry Hill last Sunday saw large crowds come support both of Bendigo East's teams, both at Quarry Hill and both hosting good quality play.

The game of the round was Bendigo East vs. Falcons in the A Grade competition. An injured Harley Dunlop and a missing David Simpson left the team undermanned, but Talia McDonald stepped up and played left-field for the team. Bendigo East opened up the fielding to a quick 1-2-3 innings thanks to the quality pitching of Damien Tresize and good infield work of Anthony Sheriff and Julian Oxlade. Matthew Gould, Anthony Sheriff, Julian Oxlade and Damien Tresize hit hard in Bendigo East's first turn with the bat, giving East an early 4-0 lead after the first. However, fine Falcons batting allowed for the gradual catch-up over the period of three innings. Bendigo East were kept scoreless mainly due to the outstanding fielding of Falcons 2nd base-man Brad Muns. Occasional good hits were seen from East such as triples from Damien Tresize and Brendan Aikman, however Falcons fielding prevented runs, making the hits practically useless.

The game was kept relatively tight, Bendigo East squeezed a run through late in the game, but soon after let through many runs through fielding errors, quality Falcons batting and a damaged infield surface. High pressure pick-offs from Damien Tresize were unsuccessfull, but usefull, however, Bendigo East could not catch up to Falcons 4 run lead. Final score Bendigo East: 5 lost to Falcons: 9.

The other A Grade match had Strathfieldsaye Dodgers host Scots at Strathfieldsaye. After coming out of a 11-5 win against Bendigo East, Dodgers came into the game highly confident. Round 1 gave Scots a 15-2 victory over Dodgers, but on Sunday, Dodgers demonstrated their improvement and pulled of a 6-6 draw.

Sunday morning's game was a fight between Bendigo East and Strath Dodgers B3 who came into the game both winless for the season.

The game looked to be a tight one, Luke Smart started the pitching for Bendigo East, but good batting from Dodgers players such as Scott Baxter, Chris Murphy and Shane Sellen saw runs leak through. Good fielding by Dion Judd and quick thinking by Don Mitchell behind the plate helped limit Dodgers run-rate. However, it was the third innings of batting for Bendigo East that cemeted the win. East batted through a whole order without a single out, and then the hits came. Chris Tieman hit an amazing triple, which eventually led to three triples for the day and Brendan Aikman hit an in-park grand-slam but was wrongly called out at second base for not touching the base. That lead to the third out of the innings, but 3 RBI's were secured.

Sam Wilson hit back hard in the next innings. His solo in-park home run was a definate home run and was a perfect revenge for the previous innings mishap. Good batting continued from Talia McDonald who hit a triple and Chris Tieman who was at his top form. A pitching change that saw Chris Murphy take the mound for Dodgers finished the game and the final score finished up Bendigo East 25 defeated Dodgers B3 9.

Queens Arms Announce Sponsorship

The Queens Arms Hotel, Bendigo has now announced their sponsorship of the Bendigo East Baseball Club in 2010.

This initial sponsorship phase includes a donation of money to the club and player of the match vouchers to the bistro under the condition that patronage from club members remains high. This should be relatively easy because of ground upgrades, more senior players, more senior teams, high rates of participation at training, more home games and the fact that the location of this year's presentation night will be at the Queen's Arms. In any case, if Bendigo East can show our support of the venue, our club will see many more sponsorship deals in the future.

2010 Debut

1st 9 Back On Home Ground

A Grade quality baseball returns this weekend to Quarry Hill for the first time since 2007.

Furthermore, Bendigo East will play Strathfieldsaye Dodgers for the first time since the Preliminary Final, 2007 held at Eaglehawk. Bendigo East won the game, but loss to Falcons in the Grand Final. In 2009 Bendigo East and Strathfieldsaye Dodgers formed a strong A Grade team that was quite successfull with the pitching talent of Josh Davies, Damien Tresize and Nick Whatley. This year, however, the team has split and equalised their talent, with the exception of Josh Davies who is not playing in 2010 due to shoulder problems.

The first 9 to play on Quarry Hill this year, in no particular order are as followed: Anthony Sheriff, James Clow, Julian Oxlade, Matthew Gould, Luke Smart, Harley Dunlop, David Simpson and Damien Tresize starting the pitching to Aaron Sheriff. Of course, a big thank-you is needed for Rodney Floyd, Jye Floyd, Don Mitchell and Arthur Smart for the preparation of the field

Despite Dodgers excellent pre-season they have started the season off on a shocker. Two crushing defeats; 15-2 and 25-2 to Scots and Falcons respectively due to team-crippling injuries and, perhaps, the absence of Josh Davies on the batting attack.

Bendigo East's season has started off relatively well, low numbers have hit hard, but the team is managing to stick together. A near-miss with Falcons strongest team planted East as contenders this year and a convincing win over Scots last week showed that East's batting attack has some depth as well. In fact, both Dodgers and East representatives believes that this week Bendigo East will once again take victory.

Game time starts at 2.30pm, Sunday at Quarry Hill. Please come to support our A Grade team in 2010

A Graders Pull Off An Amazing Win

Bendigo East seniors were in crisis on Anzac Day. The club could only field 12 senior players in both A and B Grade but club spirit was high and not a blank was seen in either line-up.

The A-Graders were 7 players short 10 minutes before the start of the game, but 6 B Grade players along with a very hungry and hungover James Clow showed up and were ready to play. On debut for A Grade were Talia McDonald and Jye Floyd along with an enthusiastic Don Mitchell who hadn't played A Grade for years. It didn't look promising in the top of the first for Bendigo East, Scots pitcher, Aaron Petri looked to be in fine form, cleaning up Bendigo East's top order. One of the few remaining A Grade players, Damien Tresize started off pitching to a struggling James Clow behind the plate. Only one runner made it on for Scots, John Taylor and he eventually scored a run, giving Scots the early lead.

Aaron Petri soon lost form and walked Bendigo East's next 4 batters. The highlight of the game came in the second inning. Sneaky President, Don Mitchell capitalised on his huge lead off third base and stole home off a regular fast-ball straight across the plate. RBIs from Brendan Aikman and James Clow then gave East a 4-1 lead going into the third inning. Tresize's fine pitching continued all through the game and good fielding by Clow, Aikman and Harley Dunlop held Scots at 1 run, not to mention Don Mitchell's effort by catching in both A Grade and B Grade. A pitching change saw catcher John Taylor take the mound, Petri to shortstop and the quality all-round player Ben Jacobs behind the plate. However, this only slowed East's run rate down. Safe hits were scarce in the game, the majority of Bendigo East's runs were scored off fielding errors.

This A-Grade outfit pulled off an amazing game, especially with quality players such as, Aaron and Anthony Sheriff, Julian Oxlade, Luke Smart and Dion Judd all missing. It was definately the under-dog's this week that proved it doesn't matter what quality players you have, it is how you play on the day that wins you game. One thing can be determined from this result, Bendigo East's A Grade team at full strength will be a force to be reckoned with. Final score: Scots 1 lost to Bendigo East 7.

The other A Grade game played at Strathfieldsaye between Dodgers and Falcons saw a major 25 run win for Falcons against a depleted Dodgers team.

Sunday morning's game had Strathfieldsaye Dodgers B2 meet with Bendigo East at Quarry Hill in the B Grade competition.

Poor fielding by East and good hitting and baserunning by Dodgers gave the visitors a big 4-0 lead in the top of the first, despite Bendigo East's pitcher, Harley Dunlop being superb. Anti-climatic batting from Bendigo East's part made Dodgers look like clear stand-outs from the start, but excellent East fielding, especially by Sam Wilson returned in the second innings to keep Dodgers at 4. Good quality batting from Talia McDonald, Geoff Clow, Dave Simpson, Jye Floyd and Brendan Aikman saw Bendigo East runs leak through gradually all through the game and let Bendigo East sneak up on Dodgers.

In the third, Bendigo East was cruising with loaded bases and none out. But a ground ball hit up the third base line by Sam Wilson saw a major mix-up from Bendigo East base runners and an easy triple play occured from the mountain off running errors. A pitching change later in the game was made by Bendigo East. Sam Wilson took charge from Dunlop and held Dodgers scoreless in his first innings and pitched well throughout the game.

Apart from a few mishaps from East's running and fielding in areas of the game, both teams played a good game. Final score: Bendigo East 8 tied with Strathfieldsaye Dodgers 8.

Like A Grade, The B Grade team was also very low on numbers. Josh McClusky, Luke Smart, Chris Tieman, Brad Huggard and Nic Egan were all missing. From the 12 senior players that were available, 6 of them played both games; Talia McDonald, Harley Dunlop, Don Mitchell, Dave Simpson, Jye Floyd and Brendan Aikman. Two of those, Harley and Jye had also played U18s on Saturday (and won). Congratulations to the both, Harley has now played 6 games for Bendigo East already this season in only 2 weeks, Jye has also pulled off an impressive 5 games for the year.

U14s Go Down Swinging

The score 13-3 did not reflect how the U14s played this weekend against Scots. Bendigo East went into the game with 2 short, but with help from Jakob Gormley-Dunlop from the U12s the team had only 1 blank. Billy Parsons, who pitched for Preston Little League last summer started Scots pitching and despite this, East managed to score some runs off him because of good base running.

Catherine Aikman took a nasty hit to the stomache in the first innings off a Parson's fast ball, but always had the team in mind and kept on battling through, getting some valuable put-outs on first base. Kyle Judd started Bendigo East's pitching, getting 2 Ks in the first innings. Good fielding by James O'Keefe, Isaac Thomas and Sarah Wingrave helped Scots score relatively low. A great safe-hit bunt hit by Kaitlen Beer mid-way through the game was the main highlight, as it scored a run and advanced a runner too.

Baserunning in the game was the clear improvement from last week's game against Falcons. Isaac Thomas got his first opportunity to pitch and he pitched well, getting some outs and important experience, Isaac also batted well against the two state level pitchers; Billy Parsons and Lachie Jack.

BEBC Release Top 6

Bendigo East Baseball Club is pleased to release their Nominated "Top 6" A Grade players for 2010. After a year of only filling a B Grade team, it is good to see so many quality players coming back to play top class local baseball. The six are as followed, in no particular order:

1. Aaron Sheriff.

A long time player for Bendigo East, Aaron played and coached the B Grade last year, which was arguably the best team in the association. He represented Bendigo last year in the Baseball Victoria Senior Winter Championships and also represented the Strathfieldsaye Dodgers and was a valuable pitcher, catcher and infielder for the successful team.

2. Damien Tresize.

Like Aaron, Damien played B Grade last year and dominated the competition. The last game, he threw the entire game and threw 19 strike-outs. Furthermore, he started the pitching several times for Strathfieldsaye Dodgers and will be a highly valuable pitcher for Bendigo East this year.

3. Matthew Gould.

After a very long break spanning over 6 years, Matthew returned to the club last year, just to play B Grade. But he was very surprised with his skill that he had devoloped over the time, and soon started to play for the Strathfieldsaye Dodgers as an infielder. He easily won the Bendigo East MVP in 2009, which prompted this year's return to the Bendigo East A Grade team.

4. James Clow.

2009 marked a year off for James in his Bendigo East career. Although he did not play, his presence was still felt in the club as a lively supporter. This RBI award winner, former club President, former academy coach and state baseballer holds great experience and will be a fantastic player for the team.

5. Anthony "AJ" Sheriff.

Brother of Aaron, one of the best outfielders the club has ever seen, 2010 marks the return for AJ to A Grade baseball. This power hitter shows his skill, featuring recently on the club RBI "Joy Pain" Trophy in 2006. After a year long break the team is extremely lucky to have such rare outfielding talent back into the club.

6. Julian Oxlade.

Belonging to one of the most respected familes in Bendigo East history, Julian makes a long awaited return to Bendigo East after several years. Even after the many years off, Julian has maintained his infielding and hitting ability which will prove to be a vital asset to the team.

Bendigo East Seniors Go Down In Round 1

The Bendigo East A Grade team nearly caused the upset of the round by taking reigning premiers, Falcons to the line.

Falcons starting pitcher, Troy Waterman, showed the value of Falcons now retired pitchers, Casey Jones and Sheldon Christie, as Bendigo East struck early, scoring 2 runs in the first thanks to the good hitting of Matt "Goodwin" Gould, Aaron Sheriff, AJ Sheriff and James Clow. Bendigo East's opening pitcher, Damien Tresize started the game well, leaving a record high opposition runners stranded on base for numerous innings, holding Falcons scoreless.

"I do it on purpose," Tresize admits, "I like to build a climax, to keep excitement in the crowd. Make the game interesting to watch for our supporters."

However, just a few innings later, Falcons took back three unearned runs, gaining the lead, thanks to East's poor infielding. In the top of the next innings Bendigo East struck back, scoring two off Falcons youngster Jake Connaugton, thanks to a pass ball and an RBI from Brendan Aikman. Falcons then needed 2 off the last innings to win. Falcons took one earnt run, before East made the pitching change of Aaron Sheriff, whilst Clow took over as catcher. But this change was simply too little, too late and Falcons walked the winning run over the plate. Final score: Falcons 5 def. Bendigo East 4.

Despite this nail-biting loss, the team, lacking in numbers, pulled off a great game, considering Bendigo East haven't put in an A Grade team since 2008 and the majority of the line-up was last years B Grade team. In any case, this near-miss for Falcons rang only one thing through their minds... their winnings days may just have come to an end.

This week's other A Grade game saw the strong Strathfieldsaye Dodgers meet with Scots Baseball Club at Maiden Gully on Sunday. However, it was Scots this time that caused the major upset of punters. Scots Baseball came back determined this year after a winless A Grade season, finishing dead last of the ladder.

Round 1 of 2010 and Scots have already shown the BBA that they are now real contendors for this year's title. Their developing pitching attack proved worthwhile, John Taylor and Aaron Petri, along with the up and coming talent that is Ben Jacobs behind the plate.

"I think Scots will do quite well this year," Dodgers coach, Colin Pithie reports.

The Scots batting also proved too strong for Melbourne University import, Nick Whatley, who pitched exceptionally well last year for the Strath Dodgers A Grade outfit. Final score: Scots 15 def. Strathfieldsaye Dodgers 2.

Sunday's early game at Maiden Gully saw Scots Baseball Club host Bendigo East in the B Grade Competition. The team was filled with young talent from debut players, Wes Hopcott who was part of the premiership U14 team of 2009 and U17 "Ralphy Award" winner of 2009, Josh McClusky.

The team also showed off Jye Floyd, Sam Wilson and Bellarine Bears import, Talia McDonald to add to the pool of young talent. Not to mention rising stars Luke Smart and Harley Dunlop who debuted their A Grade games later in the afternoon against Falcons. The team was led by Bendigo East veterans Donnie Mitchell and Geoff Clow. "The wild man," Sam Wilson started on the hill for Bendigo East, but walks and poor infield defence from East gave Scots the early lead. Poor batting from the visitors gave Scots a 7-0 margain into the last, but efficient pitching from club President, Donnie Mitchell, kept them at that.

Reports of past player Nicholas Egan attending the game were proved true, as he came to support Bendigo East and check out the local competition.

"Yes, it is a possibility that Nic Egan will return for the East 2nds," Assistant Coach, Brendan Aikman reports. "To have a young interstate catcher on the team would lift the team's performance and prove to be a vital asset for the club."

"Yeah, I might come back to play some B Grade this year," Egan says, "the chances seem to be getting higher and higher as a player."

The team's batting performance picked up in the last. Another Geelong import, Dion Judd, Jye Floyd and comeback kid of the century, Chris Tieman hit well, picking up 2 runs late in the game. Judd and Tieman, not only debuted in the B Grade for Bendigo East, but they too also played in the A Grade game later that afternoon, proving all critics wrong. In the end it was the Scot's pitching attack led by former Bendigo East players Wayne Petri and Kenan Jack that won them the game. Final Score: Scots 7 def. Bendigo East 2.

U16s Start off Strong

The Bendigo U16 team led by new coach Chris Tieman, battled it out on Sunday against his former club Strathfieldsaye Dodgers, led by their new coach, Mark Cruse. After Bendigo East's U14 team crused their way though the 2009 season undefeated, their only real opponents were Strath Dodgers. But this year, Dodgers have picked up two new crucial players. Dodgers A Grade player, Tim Pithie (starting catcher) and Greenhills Baseball Club (VWBL) import, Josh Cruse, leading off the pitching for the team.

Dodgers started off strong in the first innings, scoring 3 off Bendigo East's starting pitcher Wes Hopcott. East came back but only scored one in the bottom of the first, thanks to  Josh Cruse's pitching. Hopcott returned in the second for East and continued his tight pitching, keeping the Dodgers scoreless. Bendigo East struck the lead later that inning, proving their strong offense by catching up to the speed of Josh Cruse and capitalising on their base running experience. 2 double plays mid-way through the game also showed that Bendigo East is an all-round good defensive team. Tom Williamson took over the pitching in the third for East, but was soon overwhelmed with batting strength of Pithie, Cruse and Andrew Miller. Kane Tieman, last year's MVP releaved Williamson halfway through the innings to close it out.

Bendigo East scored a massive 7 runs in the third, taking advantage of a less experienced new pitcher Todd Nester. Kane Tieman continued well and East's batting held up, however, Bendigo East's defense crumbled in the fifth, letting through big hits from Cruse and an in-field home-run off errors by Pithie, which closed up the margain to 2 runs, but time ran out, and the score reverted back to 13-8. This year's U16 competition should be one to watch, although small in teams, this new age group will host the regions finest rising stars to the BBA seniors league.

U12s Get Game

The under 12’s team season has officially commenced! Despite the final score
reflecting Falcons 7-1 win against us, the team had fun and hopefully learned quite
a bit. The team had 4 new players, Brennen and Connor Cantwell, and Kristy and Chloe
Penrose , along with the three returning players from last year- Jakob
Gormley-Dunlop, Reece Cornish, and Ryan Beer. Reece opened up for East pitching to
Jakob, then halfway through Brennen took over for Reece and Ryan took over for
Jakob. Jakob, Reece, Brennen, and Chloe all hit singles and made it to first base
safely. Unfortunately only Reece was able to score for East due to some confusion at
second involving Brennen. As the Falcons were concentrating on getting Brennen out,
Brennen over ran 2nd base, Reece was sent home by 3rd base coach Ivan Priest to
score East’s only run for the match. Brennen was called safe due to Falcons not
tagging him out. It was a good start to the season in that we had 4 new
players this year and 2 of them managed to get safe hits their first ever game of
baseball. Special thanks: Ivan Priest for helping coach, Simone Cantwell for
playing bench mum, and Rick Cornish for scoring.
